Its 11th-century castle dominates the town and is well worth a visit. As is the famous Tomb of the Hellish Quadriga, an ancient Etruscan necropolis, which was only discovered in 2023.
In addition to its fascinating historical sights, Sarteano has all the amenities guests will need, restaurants, bars, grocery shops and supermarkets. The town’s weekly market takes place every Friday morning and is the best place to find the freshest local and seasonal produce. Some of the finest wine, Vino Nobile, can be found in Montepulciano (27 minutes). Here you can find several cellars where you can buy the famous red wine directly from the producers. The town of Montepulciano makes a lovely day trip, with its Medieval and Renaissance squares and winding streets, which house some excellent restaurants. For a relaxing day out, Chianciano Terme (10 minutes) is one of the most popular spa destinations in Europe. Their thermal springs have been enjoyed since Etruscan times. Alternatively, the charming village of Bagno Vignoni (35 minutes) also offers thermal springs and its famous water-filled square. The closest airport is in Perugia - San Francesco D'Assisi 1 hour 15 minutes, slightly further is Florence’s Amerigo Vespucci airport - 1 hour 30 minutes.
