Celebrate tradition amidst the culture and art of Florence at Festa della Rificolona!
A festive parade, the glowing warmth of lanterns on the city streets, and a charming atmosphere that ties age-old tradition to the present. At Festa della Rificolona (Florence Paper Lantern Festival), witness a magical and colourful spectacle in one of the most iconic cities of Italy, Florence.
Also known as the Rificolona Festival, this 17th C festival is a traditional celebration which coincides with the eve of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary on the 7th of September. The word "rificolona" refers to the rificolone, a paper lantern, which is the central symbol of the event.
In the past, the lanterns were used by peasants and farmers who would come to the city to celebrate the feast of the Virgin Mary and pay tribute to the Madonna by carrying the lanterns through the streets of Florence. Today, the Festa della Rificolona has evolved into a more festive and secular event, attracting locals and tourists alike.
The festival typically begins in the evening, with the parade ending in Piazza Santissima Annunziata, where there are various entertainment activities, games, and a grand display of illuminated lanterns. The festival culminates with a spectacular display of fireworks, lighting up the night sky and providing a memorable finale to the celebration in this famous city of art and artists!
