Holy Week in Malta is one of the most important and moving times of the year. What to Expect

Holy Week begins with Palm Sunday, when churches bless palm leaves and olive branches, commemorating Jesus’ entry into Jerusalem. The atmosphere gradually becomes more contemplative as the week progresses, with daily Masses, prayers, and visits to beautifully decorated churches.

One of the most meaningful traditions takes place on Maundy Thursday, when locals perform the “Seven Visits,” walking to seven different churches to pray before elaborately adorned altars of repose.

The most striking events occur on Good Friday, a public holiday in Malta. Towns and villages host slow, candlelit processions featuring life-sized statues depicting scenes from the Passion of Christ. Participants often dress as biblical figures, while others walk barefoot or hooded as acts of devotion. These processions are solemn, emotional, and deeply atmospheric.

The mood changes completely on Easter Sunday, when the Resurrection is celebrated with joy. Bells ring across the islands, and lively processions of the Risen Christ take place, with statues carried briskly through the streets, symbolising triumph and renewal.
