A Taste of Alpine Life

Every year, Livigno celebrates the ancient mountain ritual of alpine transhumance, when farmers bring their festively decorated cattle down from the high pastures of Trepalle back into the valley. Scheduled for 19 and 20 September 2026, Alpenfest is a heartwarming tribute to the rhythms of mountain life, where local traditions, food, and folklore come together in a joyful celebration.

What to Expect

The highlight of Alpenfest is the spectacular animal parade through the streets of Livigno. Cows adorned with flower garlands and bells are guided by farmers dressed in traditional attire, offering a glimpse into the region’s pastoral heritage. The festivities continue with live performances by folk musicians, choirs, and dance groups that fill the village with music and color.

A unique part of the event is the “Traditions on Display” showcase, where animals are presented for judging, and the best receive the coveted Alpenfest Trophy. Visitors can also indulge in a gourmet lunch curated by local chefs, inspired by old recipes and regional ingredients. Dishes like glazed pork cheek, veal tongue, and the local dessert known as Tórta da Rosina offer a true taste of Livigno’s alpine cuisine.

For families and curious visitors, there are workshops and demonstrations of traditional crafts like butter making, goat milking, wool working, and hay art. As the day winds down, the streets of Livigno come alive again with street food, locally brewed beer, and live entertainment including DJ sets and folk-pop performances. The second day of the festival moves to Trepalle, one of the highest villages in Europe. The celebrations begin with a cattle parade from Presot to Passo Eira, followed by a day of local food stalls, mountain craft workshops, traditional dancing, and live music. The atmosphere is smaller and more intimate than the main event, but it continues with the same energy and strong local character.
