There are also some lovely beaches nearby including Porto Miggiano Beach (6-minute walk) which has fine sand and crystal-clear sea. The charming town of Castro (7 minutes) has an ancient historic centre and stunning granite coastline which you can explore by boat. Not to be missed is the city of Lecce (40 minutes drive), known as the “Florence of the South” and blessed with wonderful Baroque architecture as well as Roman ruins. It is a jewel of a city and well worth a visit. Not only for its long history but also for its excellent food and good shopping. Santa Cesarea Terme has a wide range of restaurants and pizzerie serving delicious local cuisine. For self-catering, the twice-weekly market in Lecce is a treasure trove of the finest regional produce from fish, vegetables and fruit to olive oil and cheese. Alternatively, visit the smaller weekly markets in the towns nearby. The closest airport is at Brindisi - 1 hour and 10 minutes away by car.
