It is also famous for its delicious food and is a centre for the Slow Food Movement. The town’s weekly market (Thursday mornings) is the ideal place to pick up the best local ingredients. Castellana Grotte (17 minutes) is named after the series of caves near the town. This is regarded as the finest cave system in Italy and makes for a spectacular day out. The town itself is a lovely place to explore, with narrow streets and fine squares. The house is only 20 minutes from the Adriatic Coast and 25 minutes from one of the most striking beaches in Italy, Lama Monachile, Polignano a Mare. The white sandy beach is small but the water is clear and a great place for snorkelling. It is also the home of the annual World Cliff Diving Championship. The closest airport is at Bari, a 1-hour drive from the house.
